Sandra Friend

Travel writer, guidebook author, specialist in Florida hiking.

Bowing to a bloodline of adventure that includes explorer Henry Hudson and Lappi reindeer herders, Sandra Friend eschewed a profitable information technology career for the wilds of freelancing in 1999.

After getting her feet wet with outdoor writing in the mid-Atlantic and traveling backpacker-style across Greece, India, and Nepal with her sister, Sandra carved out a niche: Florida hiking. With 2,500 miles on foot and eight hiking books to her credit, she took on two travel guides to Florida, and signed on full-time as Communications Director for the Florida Trail Association.

With lessons learned from the 2007 SATW Institute, Sandra has been busy learning how to leveraging the power of the Internet to market her 20 books while continuing to balance freelance article writing and travel research with her job.

She has served on the Nature-based Tourism Committee for VISIT FLORIDA for several years, most recently as Chair, providing industry input for better tourism marketing of the wild side of Florida.
